Earthquake Response Analysis of Soil Layers Using HFTD Approach

Abstract
Hybrid Frequency Time Domain (HFTD) method is used to evaluate the nonlinear response analysis of soil layers due to the earthquake incident loads. Solution schemes by the frequency and the time domains are rationally combined to achieve an optimum solution procedure. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) are used for the transformation of the results from one domain to the other and vice versa. A computer program has been developed to calculate the nonlinear ground response based on HFTD concept. A rational iteration procedure is adopted in which the nonlinear effects are updated in time and depth of the soil layer system and convergence is checked to be within an adopted and predefined tolerance. Shear strength of soil is assumed to follow a nonlinear and hyperbolic relation with shear strains. The method developed here is fast and efficient which guarantees satisfactory results with considerable level of accuracy. Examples are solved and the validity of the results is discussed in the paper.
