Abstract
Geotechnical engineering being at the beginning of the construction process has huge potential to improve the sustainability of projects in the earlier stages of the decision making process. Currently however, there is a lack of guidance for geotechnical engineers about how to embed sustainability into geotechnical projects. Moreover there is no established system that truly assesses the sustainability of a geotechnical project and encompasses the three core pillars of sustainable development (Economic, Environmental and Social). This paper will examine the role that geotechnical engineers have to play in achieving sustainable development and how a specialised assessment tool can aid them to better shape the outcomes of geotechnical projects towards sustainability.
