Evaluation of EICM for Subsurface Moisture, Temperature, and Frost Depth in Flexible Pavements

Publication: GeoFlorida 2010: Advances in Analysis, Modeling & Design

Abstract

A comprehensive long-term field monitoring data of subsurface moisture, temperature, and frost depth regimes in six pavements sections, each with different drainable base materials, has been gathered at the I-90 in Ashtabula County, Ohio. At these pavement sections, a complete weather station was used to monitor the climatic data, including ambient temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and solar radiation. The moisture, temperature, and frost data were obtained through on-site TDR, MRC, and CRREL sensors embedded beneath asphalt pavement layers down to 1.82 m below the asphalt concrete layer. This paper provides a very brief overview of the instrumentation program at the monitoring site, followed by a brief introduction of the EICM program. The main focus of the paper, however, is on the comparison between the predicted and measured moisture, temperature, and frost depth distributions. The insights gained from this evaluation are presented at the end of this paper.
