Towards Non-Contact Surface Wave Testing of Subsonic Soil Layers Using Microphones

Abstract

An experiment using a microphone as a non-contact seismic receiver for surface wave testing of unbound pavement materials is presented. Measurements are based on the evanescent acoustic field in the air close to the soil surface. Results show that microphones can be successfully used to measure a surface wave dispersion curve comparable to a dispersion curve obtained with traditional contact receivers. This opens up the possibility for faster on-the-fly quality control of pavement layers since receiver surface contact is no longer required.
