Knowledge Based Geologic Hazard Risk Assessment for Municipal, Transportation, Energy, and Industrial Infrastructure

Abstract
Geologic hazards can be identified in a complex urban environment and then combined with historic main break, leak and sinkhole data to develop a utility failure knowledge management system for use in karst areas. Development of a predictive utility failure model based upon 35 years of pavement management, sidewalk reconstruction, utility break, and utility line construction records is presented. Pavement cracking and clusters of service breaks were found to be indicators of slow subsidence in pinnacled solution-prone bedrock areas. High risk deep solution weathering cutter zones were identified using sanitary sewer profiles and verified by ground probing radar. The developed leak-break knowledge management system will be used to identify high risk water, gas, sewer, and stormwater utility areas.
