Abstract
Ground response analysis in two dimensional modeling is one of the problems considered in geotechnical earthquake engineering. In many cases, a site might be located on an alluvial valley and two dimensional analysis should be performed instead of one dimensional analysis in order to obtain reliable surface accelerations. In this research rectangular valleys with different ratios of width to thickness are modeled in two dimensions and the acceleration response of soil on the middle point of surface is evaluated. Results indicate that the amplification of the motions in two dimensional models with different width to thickness ratios of the valley differs from those calculated by one dimensional technique. The ratio of the width to thickness for which the results of one and two dimensional analysis are similar, is also determined.
