Abstract
Seismic performance of an earthfill dam called the Walnut Canyon dam was evaluated in terms of seismic deformation and transverse cracking potential under postulated shaking conditions. A statistical review of construction data along with field investigation and laboratory testing played a vital role in characterizing materials comprising the dam for use in the nonlinear deformation analysis. As a result of this study, the continued use of the dam was approved by the California Division of Safety of Dams (DSOD) with provision for additional instrumentation.
