Cycling Management: The Success Story of the City of Bolzano Bozen
Publication: Transportation and Development Innovative Best Practices 2008
Abstract
Traffic jams, air pollution, lack of exercise — these are problems that a large majority of us face every day. Cycling is one of the best solutions to all of them: it is an active contribution to creating an urban environment with less traffic and better air quality, it helps people to improve their well-being and contributes to a better quality of life in urban areas. The Municipality of Bolzano Bozen, located in South Tyrol (Italy), has been promoting bike mobility for several years. As an overall result, the modal split of bike mobility in this town rose from 17% to 25% in less than five years. This paper gives an overview of the results achieved through several projects and activities implemented in collaboration with the Ökoinstitut Südtirol/Alto Adige.
