Fen Wetland Groundwater Recharge Determination and Protection at Carrington Reserve

Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2007: Restoring Our Natural Habitat

Abstract

Proper development planning can protect rare fen wetland areas. Regulations provide some protections against direct impacts; however, indirect impacts can be just as devastating. Protection of groundwater sources that sustain fen wetlands is complicated — there is no simple method to identify recharge boundaries. Groundwater sources are determined by intricate geologic and groundwater nuances. A recently constructed residential development located partially within the recharge area of a fen in West Dundee, Illinois illustrates how groundwater protection can be balanced against development interests. A groundwater protection plan that emphasizes Best Management Practices (BMP's) helped strike a win-win balance between development and fen preservation. The development plan employs an innovative approach to recharge area infiltration balancing. In addition, a wide range of other BMP's addresses potential adverse groundwater impacts. Finally, future monitoring and maintenance plans are funded in advance. This project illustrates how responsible development can protect important natural resources while also creating a great place to live.
