Effects of Groin Structures on the Sacramento River Flow

Abstract
Depth-averaged and fully three-dimensional computations of a reach of the Sacramento River in California are performed using a finite-volume solver based on the solution of the time-averaged forms of the governing equations. The effects arising from the deployment of groins on river flow are investigated by comparing predictions obtained for velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and bed shear stress of with and without groins. The computed velocities are compared with measurements obtained in a large-scale, distorted physical model of the same reach. Discretization errors are quantified using two different methods.
