Abstract
The South Platte River Segment 15 Aquatic Life/Habitat Assessment Study was conducted to complete a comprehensive assessment of existing aquatic habitat, and identify potential habitat improvements. A multivariate statistical approach, Limiting Factor Analysis, was utilized to identify physical, chemical or biological factors that may limit aquatic life. Hydrologic and hydraulic analyses were also used to identify existing and predicted future flows as well as flow characteristics that may also limit aquatic life. The 26 mile study reach was geographically organized into fourteen habitat subreaches. The potential for habitat improvements using a 3-tiered analytical approach was applied to each subreach. The first tier assessed the potential to improve habitat that benefits target fish species. Tier 2 analysis addressed physical, land ownership, stakeholder involvement, and biological considerations for each subreach. Tier 3 analysis addressed cost effectiveness, sustainability and regulatory concurrence for each subreach. Based on this analysis, subreach improvement recommendations were made.
