Abstract
To support the Department of Energy's (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) remedial actions program, the Applied Research Center (ARC) at Florida International University (FIU) conducted enhanced natural remediation (ENR) studies to remove trichloroethylene (TCE) from SRS groundwater. The strategy utilized natural attenuation mechanisms to enhance the biodegradation of TCE in shallow groundwater through the construction of a permeable biobarrier system (PBS). This approach relies on the introduction of natural, low cost, organic solids blended with native soil in contact with contaminated groundwater in order to create the conditions needed for complete biodegradation of TCE in-situ. The primary objective of this study was to compare two compost materials and determine their relative effectiveness at creating near-neutral pH conditions, removing dissolved oxygen and other electron acceptors such as nitrate and sulfate from groundwater, and generating highly reduced conditions that favor hydrogen generation and subsequent TCE biodegradation.
