Geostatistics for Identifying and Reducing Artifacts in Rainfall Grids from Doppler Radar Data

Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2007: Restoring Our Natural Habitat

Abstract

Rainfall maps based on Doppler radar data are known to contain artifacts, many of which can be mitigated during processing if they can be identified. Geostatistical data analysis tools can be used to analyze grids of Doppler radar data in their spatial context to enhance the identification of artifacts. A variety of geostatistical interpolation and stochastic simulation procedures exist for post-processing the raw data to reduce local bias in the resulting rainfall maps. Case study examples based on Doppler radar data from northeast Florida are used to demonstrate procedures for identifying artifacts and for reducing their impact.
