Groundwater Goes Computational: My Role
Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2007: Restoring Our Natural Habitat
Abstract
Significant advances in research can be achieved most often by applying a new tool to an old problem, an old tool to a new problem or a new tool to a new problem. In subsurface hydrology the new practical, or engineering related problems appearing in the last three decades have been associated primarily with groundwater contamination by anthropogenic compounds. From a more scientific perspective, coupled systems, such as groundwater-surface water interaction can be considered new problems because they were intractable prior to the advent of new computational tools. The new computational tools are, generally speaking, extensions or modifications of existing tools that have been adapted to exploit the growth in computer power over this period. Such tools are, for example, numerical analysis, geostatistics, multiphase flow and transport theory, operations research, and some relatively unknown methods such as Kalman filtering. In this presentation advances attributable to research conducted by the author that were realized through the utilization of new tools to solve both new and existing problems is reviewed.
