Abstract
Leaching behavior of estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), octylphenol, and nonylphenol were studied in a tropical soil that is enriched with metal oxides. Due to intense weathering, silica content is depleted in these soils. The adsorption behavior of these chemicals was studied as a function of solution pH, ionic strength, and dissolved organic content. Leaching experiments were conducted to examine the transport of these chemicals in packed columns. Results indicate that these compounds strongly adsorb to the tropical soils and it is very difficult to obtain breakthroughs even at high influent concentrations.
