Introducing Field Experiences into the Undergraduate Curriculum

Abstract
This paper addresses the incorporation of field experiences into the undergraduate curriculum. Specific field applications were introduced in a fourth-year hydrology course and a first-year introductory civil engineering course in the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). In the hydrology course, field equipment was used to monitor flows and quality in urban streams, as required for projects involving urban runoff. For two course offerings, "linked" projects were developed in which students from upper-level classes worked with the students in the first-year course. All of the students gained experience setting up field experiments and working in teams, while the upper-level students gained some experience by leading the field effort and explaining the use of the equipment to younger students. Student feedback was positive, with students appreciating the hands-on projects and hands-on experience involves in the projects. Additional field experiences are being incorporated into team capstone CEE projects, which are completed by fourth-year students. By including field experiences in these projects, students gain an appreciation for the planning and careful consideration required when completing field programs. The results illustrate the importance of incorporating fieldwork into the undergraduate curriculum.
