Arching Prediction in Granular Materials with a Nonlinear Yield Condition

Abstract
Predictions of arching in sand mounds are discussed first. Admissible stress fields with a stress `dip' at the center of the base caused by arching are presented. It is argued that the nonlinearity of the yield condition may enhance the materials' tendency to arching. The problem of hopper flow is used to illustrate how the width of a hopper outlet can be estimated to prevent arching.
