Contrasting Terrestrial and Lunar Gravity: Angle of Repose and Incline Flows

Abstract
In this paper we study the angle of repose and the incline flow behaviors under the Earth and Moon gravity fields, where particles of a range of contact friction are subject to different electrostatic forces. A two-dimensional discrete element method is used in this analysis with two particle shapes. The results show little sensitivity of the angle of repose to gravity. The sensitivity to friction and electrostatic charges can be significant or negligible, depending on the range of these values. The mass flow rate over an incline may be non-dimensionalized so that it collapses to a single curve independent of gravity.
