Wax Protection for Ground Anchors
Publication: GeoSupport 2004: Drilled Shafts, Micropiling, Deep Mixing, Remedial Methods, and Specialty Foundation Systems
Abstract
Special applications of permanent anchors and micro piles are used mainly for foundations and to secure construction, but also can be used for a variety of additional geotechnical applications. The following are three noteworthy case histories. In tension piles for harbor construction with a service load of 270 Kips and a length of 86 feet, the firm was able to improve the load transfer into the soil by increasing the diameter of the pile in the upper part by high-pressure injection up to a depth of 40 feet. Through the use of the post-tensioning permanent anchor system with a service load of 142 Kip and a length of 86 feet, the company was able to provide protection of the permanent anchors against aggressive concrete-attacking groundwater. In underpinning historical buildings in Berlin with micro piles with a service load of 194 Kip and a length of 105 feet, the firm was able to fabricate and install piles within cramped cellars, apply special constructive measures for connecting the piles and provide for corrosion protection within the aggressive organic soil. All details of the construction are described. As a basis for reliable, controlled performance, details regarding the quality control program are also discussed.
