The following correction should be made to the original paper:
Figs. 3(b and c) and 4, as reported in the paper, were inadvertently expressed in terms of the parameter B/H instead of the geometric ratio α=H/B, which was used in the equations. Therefore, the corrected format of Figs. 3(b and c) and 4 is revised as shown herein. Thus, for the typical case of a soft story building with a story height of 3.0 m and four 30/30cm square columns at the base, the uncoupled period ratio TL/Tθ ranges between 2.0 and 7.0, for α equal to 1.0 and 4.0, respectively, while, for this period range, the apparent rocking period T^θ=2πI/k^θ lies between 80 and 100% of the uncoupled period Tθ, also depending on α [Figs. 3(b and c)].
Fig. 3. (a) Model parameters and associated degrees of freedom and forces under dynamic equilibrium that define the inelastic rocking oscillator response of the ground soft story building; (b) interdependence of the system parameters, namely, stiffness ratio and the uncoupled periods ratio TL/Tθ; (c) influence of the stiffness ratio on the apparent rocking period
Fig. 4. Period shift and coupled period dependencies with ratio of lateral to vertical stiffness and aspect ratio: (a) relative magnitude T1/T2 and T2/T3; (b) uncoupled second mode period to SDOF lateral period T2/TL; (c) coupled first mode period to SDOF lateral period T1/TL; (d) coupled third mode period to SDOF lateral period T3/TL; (e) ratio of maximum to minimum frequency of the oscillator R=T1/T3; (f) percent change in critical Rayleigh damping in the intermediate vertical mode T2 assuming ξ=5% in the outer modes
