Acknowledgments

The tests reported in Figs. 24 were performed as part of the Urban Levee Evaluation program for the California Department of Water Resources (DWR). Permission from DWR to publish this information is acknowledged with appreciation. The tests were performed at Fugro’s Houston laboratory under the direction of Mr. Maurice Morvant. Dr. John T. Germaine of Tufts University, and Mr. Richard S. Ladd, independent consultant to Fugro, are acknowledged for advice and guidance in the development of the triaxial compression tests in which shear was induced by increasing pore pressure. The late Professor Charles C. Ladd served as a special consultant to the project, focusing on test methodology and interpretation of the results of the triaxial tests performed by increasing the pore water pressure. His contributions are acknowledged with appreciation.
