This paper has been retracted at the request of the editor. The paper, published in Vol. 138, No. 12, December 2012, has been determined to contain excessive overlap with the following published paper:
Pan, T., Melgar, C., and Robinson, T. (2012). “Damping capacity of styrene-butadiene latex admixed concrete: A micromechanical study.” J. Mater. Civ. Eng., 24(9), 1237–1244; DOI:10.1061/(ASCE)MT.1943-5533.0000499.
The editor and a team of independent reviewers concluded that, although the two papers are not identical, the overlapping parts are extremely similar. The papers follow an almost identical outline with respect to the figures, equations, and approach used to present the research and the results. The computational work is based on the same model and the same equations are introduced. The difference in analyses amounts to different input data into the computational models. The intellectual content of both papers is essentially identical.
ASCE policy states in the Obligations of Authors: “Fragmentation of research papers shall be avoided. An engineer or scientist who has done extensive work on a system or group of related systems shall organize publication so that each paper gives a complete account of a particular aspect of general study.” It is the Editorial Board’s opinion that this paper does not meet the requirement.
