Stability of Members and Connections in Cold-Formed and Hot Rolled Steel Structures

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 147, Issue 10
The special collection on Stability of Members and Connections in Cold-Formed and Hot Rolled Steel Structures is available in the ASCE Library (https://ascelibrary.org/jsendh/stability_cold-formed_steel_structures).
Although structural stability design is one of the oldest topics in structural engineering, especially as it relates to columns, there are very active research efforts being done worldwide on the stability of steel members and connections due to innovations in structural components and systems. As structures become more efficient and light weight, and construction technologies evolve, new stability problems have arisen that cannot be satisfactorily dealt with using the existing design methodologies. There are also age-old problems such as the stability of a gusset plate in compression that remain unresolved.
This special collection contributes to the aims of the Journal of Structural Engineering by focusing on papers that may advance the state of the art and the state of the practice in stability designs of cold-formed and hot rolled steel members and connections, published online during the year 2020. It includes papers that deal with
shear buckling of cold-formed and hot rolled steel members under various actions,
local buckling of bolted cold-formed steel moment connections,
flexural buckling of bolted hot rolled steel gusset plates,
distortional buckling of cold-formed steel members under stress gradient,
flexural-torsional buckling of hot rolled steel monosymmetric I-section arches,
tubular high-strength steel stub columns under compression and/or bending,
direct strength method design of cold-formed steel angle columns,
postyielding behavior of hot-rolled steel angle beams bent about the major axis,
preliminary stability design of cold-formed steel storage racks, and
story-based stability design of multistory frames with semirigid connections.
It is hoped that the papers will lead to improved design practices and further discourses or research on structural stability design methods.
