Experimental Investigations into CLCD with Identification of Tuning and Damping Effects

Abstract
In this paper, the results of an experimental investigation on the characterization of a compliant liquid column damper (CLCD) are presented to validate its tuning criterion and to establish the damping mechanism of the system. The experimentally obtained frequencies are found to be very close to those obtained from a coupled eigenvalue analysis of the CLCD model. The orifice head-loss coefficient is evaluated and thereby the CLCD damping is estimated. It is established that effective damping is provided by the oscillating liquid column through the orifice(s) even at the nonresonant liquid frequency. A SDOF structure-CLCD system is also excited experimentally. The experimentally evaluated structural response mitigation achieved by the CLCD is satisfactory and quite close to the results obtained by a simulation study.
