Abstract
The present study recommends a confining reinforcement mechanism, welded wire mesh (WWM), to enhance the performance of columns during seismic loading. Experimental studies were done on concrete columns confined by WWM and subjected to axial load and reverse cyclic lateral loading. Enhancement in the performance was noted in specimens with WWM with mesh size exhibiting 2.65 times the energy absorption and 73% more cyclic lateral load capacity in comparison with specimens with conventional confinement as stipulated in the Indian standard code.
