Influence of Growth Ring Orientation on the Interlaminar Fracture Toughness in Glued-Laminated Timber

Abstract
In glued-laminated timber (glulam), fracture may occur at the interface of two adjacent laminae that mostly have different growth ring orientations. The double cantilever beam (DCB) tests for Mode I fractures and three-point bending end-notched flexure (3ENF) tests for Mode II fractures were performed to obtain the interlaminar fracture toughness of glulam with focus on the influence of growth ring orientations. Experimental and numerical results show that the effect of growth ring orientations of two adjacent laminae on Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness is slight.
