2021 Journal of Management in Engineering End-of-Year Review

I am grateful to announce that I have received the 2021 Richard R. Torrens Award. The Richard R. Torrens Award honors volunteer journal editors who make outstanding contributions to the ASCE publication program. I would like to thank the associate editors and the editorial board members who have been providing excellent input and guidance to JME. Receiving the Richard R. Torrens Award is a testament that entire editorial board members’ collaborative effort and dedication bear fruit. There is still plenty of room for improvement to make JME even better, and the entire editorial board will work together to fill those gaps.

In 2021, JME added two new associate editors as submissions to JME exceeded 600 manuscripts per year. I am looking forward to working with two new associate editors from South Korea and Hong Kong, who previously served on the JME editorial board. Please welcome the following new associate editors.

I am pleased to announce that JME’s 2020 Impact Factor compiled by Clarivate Analytics was 6.853 with a 5-year impact factor of 6.212. In terms of area ranking by impact factor, JME was ranked 4 out of 136 (Quartile 1) in civil engineering, and 9 out of 49 (Quartile 1) in industrial engineering in 2020. JME received the highest impact factor among all journals published by ASCE. This is truly excellent news and an excellent achievement. I would like to thank associate editors, editorial board members, ASCE Journals Department staff, as well as scholars and peers in our field who have reviewed, published, and cited JME papers.

In 2021, JME received 621 papers and published six issues with 114 papers. The average manuscript length was 13 pages. The ASCE Journals Department reported that the review time, on average, from initial submission to first decision was 22 days and to final decision was 176 days, including a maximum of two revisions. The ratio of quick rejects to full reviews was 50:50.

Each year, JME selects the best paper to recognize and promote outstanding contributions to the body of knowledge in management in engineering. The best paper selection committee (chaired by Nader Naderpajouh in 2021) considered all the papers published from July 2020 to May 2021 and selected one best paper and two honorable mention papers. The Best Paper Award of 2021 went to Cristina Poleacovschi, Amy Javernick-Will, Sheng Wang, and Tony Tong for “Gendered Knowledge Accessibility: Evaluating the Role of Gender in Knowledge Seeking among Engineers in the US” (https://doi.org/10.1061/(ASCE)ME.1943-5479.0000865). The two honorable mention papers went to Yan Wang, John E. Taylor, and Michael J. Garvin for “Measuring Resilience of Human–Spatial Systems to Disasters: Framework Combining Spatial-Network Analysis and Fisher Information” (https://doi.org/10.1061/(ASCE)ME.1943-5479.0000782); and Yudi Chen, Qi Wang, and Wenying Ji for “Rapid Assessment of Disaster Impacts on Highways Using Social Media” (https://10.1061/(ASCE)ME.1943-5479.0000836). JME uses special collections to raise and expand important and emerging topics that would appeal broad audience in our discipline. Currently, we have five special collections in various stages.
