AWARDS: 2009 Royce J. Tipton Award

Marshall J. English, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE was the recipient of the 2009 Royce J. Tipton Award for his valuable contributions to the science, understanding, and application of irrigation engineering, including optimization of irrigation system design and management, surface irrigation hydraulic modeling, crop evapotranspiration, crop-water-soil modeling, and irrigation scheduling with full and limited water supplies.

Dr. English is professor emeritus and irrigation extension specialist in the Biological and Ecological Engineering Department at Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon. He has been part of the Oregon State University faculty for $30\text{years}$ , during which time his research and extension efforts have concentrated on optimizing irrigation management. He is counted among the research leaders in the United States in development of a new paradigm for irrigation management that seeks to maximize net economic returns to water, as opposed to maximizing crop yields. Recognizing that the new paradigm is inherently much more challenging than conventional irrigation management, his work for the past decade has focused on developing a new generation of irrigation advisory services specifically designed to assist irrigation managers with the complex challenge of optimum management of multiple fields when water supplies are limited or opportunity costs of water are high.
