Optimization of Torsion Bars with Rounded Polygonal Cross Section

Publication: Journal of Engineering Mechanics
Volume 139, Issue 5

Abstract

Rounding of the corners of a polygonal bar (or a polygonal tube conveying fluid) is unavoidable in practice. This paper studies the effect of rounding on the torsional rigidity by introducing a family of homotopy cross sections and an improved Ritz method. Rounding decreases both rigidity and cross-sectional area. For a given mass, there exists an optimal shape for maximized rigidity.
