Manuscript Submission Requirements

All manuscripts submitted to the Practice Periodical of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste Management should be accompanied with a list of four potential reviewers that are suggested by the author(s). This list should include the complete name, address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address, and a list of at least five key words that identify the expertise of each reviewer. The periodical is not obligated to use all or any of the recommended reviewers; however, we feel that this policy will lead to an improved review process. The new manuscripts should be submitted to

Special Issues

We had several dedicated issues in the past on special topics, and we plan to follow this practice in the future. The following topics are planned for future dedicated or special issues in the order listed:
Use and effects of antibiotics in CAFOs,
Bioremediation
Metals removal
Health risk assessment
Authors interested in submitting an article for consideration for one of the specialty issues should contact the editor by phone at (913) 551-7453 or by e-mail at [email protected] to submit a paper and to confirm deadlines and schedules for special or dedicated issues. Each of the specialty issues may also contain a few articles that are not related to the topic.

Guest Editors

Prof. Hilary I. Inyang is the guest editor of this special issue. He is the Duke Energy Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering and Science, Professor of Earth Science and Director of the Global Institute for Energy and Environmental Systems at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Currently, he is president of the International Society of Environmental Geotechnology (ISEG) and the Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction (GADR). From 1997 to 2001, Dr. Inyang served as chair of the Environmental Engineering Committee of the Science Advisory Board of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). He was a member of the National Advisory Council on Environmental Policy and Technology (Effluent Guidelines Committee) and has served on more than 60 international, national, and state science and engineering panels and committees. His research and allied professional activities have focused on waste containment systems, contaminant leachability, soil∕contaminant physicochemical interactions, natural-disaster mitigation techniques, rock fragmentation techniques for energy installations and underground space, and energy and environmental policy. His projects have been sponsored by such federal agencies as the U.S. Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Agriculture, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Federal Highway Administration, and the Agency for International Development. He has authored or coauthored more than 170 research articles, book chapters, federal design manuals, and the textbook Geoenvironmental Engineering: Principles and Applications (published by Marcel Dekker; ISBN: 0-8247-0045-7. He is an associate editor or editorial board member of 17 refereed international journals and contributing editor of three books, including the United Nations Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (Environmental Monitoring Section). In addition, as guest coeditor, he has developed 14 special editions of a variety of journals. He holds a PhD in geotechnical engineering∕materials from Iowa State University; a MS and BS in civil engineering from North Dakota State University, and a BSc (honors) in geology from the University of Calabar, Nigeria. He has received several professional honors, including 2001 SWISS Forum Fellow selection by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, selection as a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, the 1991 AAAS∕USEPA Environmental Science and Engineering Fellowship, 1996 National Research Council Young Investigator, and the 1992–1993 Eisenhower Fellowship of the World Affairs Council to commemorate the international achievements of President Eisenhower. In 1999, Inyang was appointed to concurrent professorship of Nanjing University, China, and subsequently selected as an honorary professor of the China University of Mining and Technology, Jiangsu, China.
Dr. Steve Piet is a coguest editor of this special issue. He is a consulting engineer in the Human and Intelligent Systems Department and deputy manager of the Environmental Systems Research and Analysis (ESRA) Program of the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), Idaho Falls, Idaho. He holds SB, SM, and doctor of science (ScD) degrees in nuclear engineering from MIT, with emphasis on fusion reactor technology, materials technology, risk assessment, and history. He is a 19-year veteran at INEEL, has more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, and wrote the safety-environmental chapter of an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) book on inertial fusion reactors. His dissertation led to the Department of Energy’s Creation of a multiple-institution fusion energy blanket∕material comparison study, in which he led the safety-environmental analysis. While on loan from INEEL, his team in the fusion International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) produced an integrated plan for safety requirements (approved by regulatory surrogates of the ITER countries), safety design (approved by designers and project management), and safety research (approved by project management and R&D teams around the world). His personal focus in ITER was the radioactivity containment system. His decade-long ITER experience included solving unusual problems with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, which included a Russian plasma physicist, a German thermal-hydraulic fluid flow transient expert, a British superconducting magnet expert, and American material scientists. More recently, he spent 4 years as the technical lead in the INEEL Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program, where he analyzed the range of technical expertise at INEEL. He is currently a deputy for the Environmental Systems Research and Analysis (ESRA) Program and co-PI for a new project to understand long-term performance of near-surface engineering environmental barriers. He also leads a research project to improve science-based decisions of decommissioning-stewardship-waste management decisions. This project will make decisions more robust, transparent, and consistent because of more effective stakeholder involvement and recognition of what it will take to implement decisions once they are made.
Dr. Irene Man-Chi Lo is a coguest editor of this special issue. She is currently associate professor of the Department of Civil Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Guess professor of Environmental Resources at Jilin University. In addition, she was visiting associate professor of both Technical University of Denmark and the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1999 and 2000, respectively. She has served as associate editor of ASCEs Practice Periodical of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste Management Journal since August 2001. Dr. Lo received both her MS and PhD in environmental engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Her technical expertise includes liners for waste containment facilities, remediation of contaminated soils and groundwater, and pollutant transport in saturated and unsaturated soils. Dr. Lo was the recipient of the 2004 J. James Croes Medal, American Society of Civil Engineers. She was also the 2003 recipient of the Peter Chan Best Paper award in Environmental Engineering of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers and the 2003 recipient of the Best Paper award from the International Conference on Soil and Groundwater Clean-up held in Oman in 2003.
