Editor’s Note

In Memory of Professor Govichettypalayam Vasudevan (G.V.) Loganathan, Associate Editor of the ASCE Journal of Hydrologic Engineering

On Monday, April 16, 2007, Professor G. V. Loganathan was one of 33 people killed in a shooting spree that occurred on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic and State University (Virginia Tech), in Blacksburg, Virginia. Professor Loganathan was born in Tamil Nadu, India. He received a bachelor of engineering (civil engineering) degree from Madras University, Madras, in 1976; a master’s degree in civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 1978; and a Ph.D. degree in civil engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, in 1982, under the direction of Professor Jacques W. Delleur.

On graduation from Purdue University, Professor Loganathan joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech as an assistant professor and rose to the rank of full professor. Professor Loganathan was a dedicated teacher, an accomplished researcher, an outstanding professional, and above all a decent, generous, and caring human being. At Virginia Tech, students consistently rated him as one of the best teachers irrespective of the size of the class or the level of the course. Not only did he have an innate talent for teaching, but, in addition, he cared for students, was always available to them, and spent untold hours with them. For his outstanding teaching and dedication, he was honored several times by his department and his college, as well as by the university.

Professor Loganathan had varied research interests, encompassing hydraulics, hydrology, and water resources systems analysis. He was a highly productive researcher and published more than 150 refereed journal articles, book chapters, and other publications; he also supervised more than 45 Ph.D. and M.S. students at Virginia Tech.

Professional service was also dear to Professor Loganathan. He served on the editorial board of the Journal of Hydrologic Engineering (JHE) since its inception. He served on numerous panels and on many committees of ASCE, AWRA, and other professional societies.

The editorial board of JHE is deeply indebted for Professor Loganathan’s service, the counsel he gave, and the time he shared. He was a dear and a valued friend to a number of board members, and his friendship will be deeply missed. No words can express the loss of his death.
