Editor’s Note

Publication: Journal of Architectural Engineering
Volume 15, Issue 1
ASCE journals were never intended to match the ability of ASCE magazines and newsletters to quickly report on news items and current events. Nevertheless, this issue of the Journal of Architectural Engineering (JAE) contains a number of contributions on topics that are certainly timely in nature.
Energy conservation continues to be a critical research and practice topic in the AEC profession, given the economic slow-down taking place worldwide, in addition to continued fluctuations in the price of oil and other energy sources. In his paper “Thermal and Economic Evaluation of Slab-on-Grade Insulation in Wood-Framed Buildings,” Brian Rock presents a model and case studies for evaluating the thermal effectiveness of slab-on-grade perimeter insulation installations. Dr. Rock indicates that the model is effective for both heating and cooling evaluations in a variety of climate conditions. The model is intended to provide designers, builders, and code officials specific information to determine whether insulation is needed and justified.
During the hurricane season this year, high winds have dealt parts of the United States another severe blow, resulting in damage to numerous forms of buildings and building systems, particularly roofing. The paper “Performance of Roof Tiles under Simulated Hurricane Impact” by Huang, Mirmiran, Chowdhury, Abishdid, and Wang examines this concern as it relates to clay and concrete roof tiles. In their paper, the authors describe the results of an experimental study that examined various tile attachment methods and assessed roof tile performance under simulated conditions. Comments on the study results compared to ASCE 7-05 values are included in the paper, as well as discussion of which tile and attachment method performed best under certain test conditions.
Forum discussions in this issue include one on green construction in India and another related to the use of Internet-based education methods in engineering capstone design courses. Thus we continue to be reminded of the vast scope and breadth of architectural engineering topics covered by the Journal.

New Online Submission System Launched

Authors can now submit manuscripts to the Journal of Architectural Engineering via the Internet and have their manuscripts reviewed online. Authors are encouraged to log onto the new Editorial Manager system to view the Author’s Tutorial and become familiar with the submission requirements and steps to follow when submitting a new manuscript. JAE joins the growing number of ASCE journals making the transition to the new online submission and paper review system.

Call for Papers

A call for papers has been issued by the Editorial Board of the Journal of Architectural Engineering (JAE) on a number of topics related to architectural engineering research and practice. Depending on the number of responses in each category, the papers will be published as a special issue or grouped into a themed regular issue of the JAE. Topics of interest include design and construction of building envelopes; research and design of high-performance green buildings; comprehensive building security design issues; active and passive fire protection; blast-resistant design of buildings (structures and envelopes); and architectural engineering education, including new trends and case histories.

Nominations: Outstanding Papers Published in 2008

Members of the Editorial Board of the JAE invite input from our readers for the outstanding paper published in the Journal in 2008. As authorized by the Board of Governors of the Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI), nominations are being accepted to recognize an outstanding paper in the area of scientific research or industry practice. Members of the Editorial Board will be studying the papers published this past year to make recommendations to the AEI Awards Committee. Readers are invited and encouraged to participate in the nomination process. If you know of a paper that you feel is worthy of recognition, please write to me with the details, including your reasons for nominating the paper, by April 1, 2009.

Call for Associate Editors

With the approval of AEI, the Journal will be adding up to four Associate Editor positions for 2009. The intent of these new positions is to place an editor in each of four strategic areas of architectural engineering to coordinate Journal activities and content. Associate editor positions will be established in the areas of construction, lighting/electrical, mechanical systems, and structures. Associate Editors will assist the Editor in the selection of reviewers, processing paper submissions, initiating special issues in their areas of expertise, and coordinating other editorial content related to the four categories noted. Associate Editors are required to be members of ASCE. Anyone interested in one of these positions should send a letter of interest, including a brief summary of qualifications and experience, to the Editor. Journal readers are encouraged to nominate one or more of their colleagues if they are aware of individuals who would be well suited for these positions.
