On the Risk of Dealing with Safe Contamination: An Issue in Development
Publication: Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice
Volume 124, Issue 3
Abstract
Infrastructure development is critical in helping the people of underdeveloped nations attain a higher standard of living. Unfortunately, in many cases, development has proceeded at the expense of human health and environmental quality. Pollution prevention, risk communication, and risk management provide avenues in dealing with contamination without legislation. Consistent with ASCE's Code of Ethics, engineers have the duty to present all the environmental consequences of engineering projects. The affected community decides the fate of any project based on the accepted environmental risks associated with it.
