Abstract
The American Society of Civil Engineers is the oldest national engineering society in the United States. Since its founding in 1852 it has served its members well as they sought to gain professional recognition. In this paper, the first of a two part paper, the history of the Society from the 1830s to 1974 will be described giving the goals and objectives of its founding members. The original objective of the society is discussed as are the changes that have taken place as the result of the growth of the society from its tentative beginnings to a large international organization. The second part of this paper will trace the evolution of the society from 1974 to the present and suggest a course for the Society that will make it the premier civil engineering society in the world.
