Satellite Observations of Wave Heights in Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal

Publication: Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering
Volume 120, Issue 6

Abstract

Waves have been observed by conventional methods, until recently. In this study, wave data recorded by GEOSAT altimeter, from November 1986 to October 1987, were analyzed to understand the behavior of waves in the Indian seas. Monthly distributions of wave heights were obtained for the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Distribution patterns clearly depicit that waves are the highest during the southwest monsoons. However, northeast monsoon waves are higher than those of the nonmonsoon season.
