Flow‐Induced Vibrations of Marine Risers

Publication: Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering
Volume 113, Issue 1

Abstract

Experimental work is carried out to investigate the behavior of an elastically mounted circular cylinder having vibrations restricted to a plane normal to the incident flow, as influenced by the vicinity to a similar but rigid and much larger diameter body. The tests indicate that the flexible cylinder may undergo either a vortex‐resonance, a galloping, or a combination of both. At some spacings, the cylinder mean position, stationary or galloping, changes with flow velocity. On decreasing the separation, the morion generally becomes more severe.
