Modern Material Ropeway Capabilities and Characteristics

Publication: Journal of Transportation Engineering
Volume 111, Issue 6

Abstract

Modern material‐handling ropeway system characteristics are described. Extremely limited in number in the United States, ropeways offer desirable characteristics in rugged terrain and in environmentally sensitive areas. Five examples from various parts of the world are presented to demonstrate ropeway capabilities. Economic data for recent systems are presented, including equipment costs, installation costs, annual operating costs, and unit transport haul costs.
