Hydraulic Resistance of Pavement Surfaces

Abstract

The determination of Manning's n as a basic measure of hydraulic resistance in analyzing rainfall runoff from paved surfaces, such as highways, streets, and runways, is investigated. Surface texture measurements central to tire friction studies are speculated to be important in runoff friction as well. British Portable Tester data, as a measure of microtexture, are shown to correlate well with table look‐up values of Manning's n for five different smooth surfaces without macrotexture. For rough surfaces, computations using pavement runoff data from three separate studies are used to show promising correlations between Manning's n and macrotexture measurements. The computations are made using a kinematic wave approximation to the shallow water equations. Fully turbulent flow conditions are shown to have prevailed in these studies as justification in using the Manning equation.
