Shape Selection for Lattice Structures

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 132, Issue 11

Abstract

A method for shape selection for lattice structures is reported. The method uses static joint equilibrium equations to determine a minimum set of adjustments to lattice geometry needed to achieve equilibrium reference states. Symbolic relations among joint coordinates, member forces, and external loads are obtained. Symbolic relations allow designers to select one equilibrium shape among a range of available shapes. The method is suitable for structures with members that carry axial force only, have zero-moment connections (pin joints), and accept external loads at joints only. Examples for two-dimensional and three-dimensional cable structures are presented.
