Cyclic Behavior of Beam-to-Column Steel Joints with Slender Web Panels
Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 121, Issue 2
Abstract
Thirteen experiments are performed to investigate the cyclic behavior of beam-to-column joints of steel frames with slender joint panels. The performance of the joints with respect to strength, rigidity, ductility, and low cycle fatigue are examined. Three different load-carrying mechanisms can be identified. They are the shear action of the web panel, the tension field action, and the frame action of the surrounding elements. The various characteristics of these actions as determined by the experiments are discussed. It is concluded that a good performance can be achieved by properly selecting the dimensions of the web panel, the surrounding flanges, and their relative proportions.
