Load Distribution in Multibeam Precast Pretopped Prestressed Bridges

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 119, Issue 3

Abstract

Three 50 ft two‐lane simply supported prestressed precast pretopped double‐T tangent bridges with and without end diaphragms are analyzed using a three‐dimensional finite‐element algorithm. The beams of each bridge are interconnected at 3 m (10 ft) intervals along their flanges. Several cases of American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) HS 20‐44 truck loadings were studied, as well as loading due to long‐term differential camber between contiguous beams. The results obtained illustrate the distribution of superimposed dead loads and wheel loads to individual beams as well as the internal forces generated by the effect of differential camber. The maximum generated internal forces under gravity loads were compared to those using AASHTO's 1983 standard specifications for highway bridges. The internal forces developed at flange connectors were also obtained and their effect on internal forces in the beams discussed. The effect of skewness was also illustrated.
