Moment‐Curvature Relationships for Dented Tubular Sections

Abstract
A new set of closed‐form and expressions for dented and undented tubular sections under combined multidirectional bending and axial load was developed. References are made to our previous works on undented sections, and to experimental test data reported by Landet in 1987. The proposed and expressions for dented and undented tubular members were used to prepare a computer program BCDENT for the strength and behavior analysis of dented (single or multiple) or undented tubular members. The formulation of the algorithm in BCDENT is described briefly, as well as another analytical method using a commercial finite element program ABAQUS. Comparisons of BCDENT predictions with available test results were made to confirm the validity and accuracy of moment‐curvature approach for the behavior analysis of dented tubular members. It is concluded that the moment‐curvature approach can predict the behavior and strength of dented tubular members adequately for use in engineering practice.
