Element Stiffness of Circular Member

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 113, Issue 4

Abstract

Based on the expression for strain energy, the coefficients of the stiffness matrix of a prismatic circular member have been formulated. The fixed end actions due to an applied concentrated load are also provided. The effect of shear deformation is not taken into account in this formulation. The primary purpose of this paper is to improve the analysis of various types of planar frames having circular members, with or without straight members, using the computer. The results of an example problem are presented and compared with existing analysis.
