Transformed‐Section Model for Composite Beams Based on Axial Stiffness

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 112, Issue 10

Abstract

A method of analysis to determine axial and bending stress distributions in open‐section beams composed of fiber‐composite layers is presented. The method is based on the transformed‐section concept, and the effects of Poisson's ratios and in‐plane shear are taken into account. Numerical results are presented for an I‐shaped cross section with various fiber orientations, and are compared to those obtained from lamination theory (Tsai & Hahn 1980), and the conventional transformedsection method (Heger, Chambers & Dietz, 1982) which neglects the effects of Poisson's ratios and shear coupling.
