Flow Velocity Profiles in Gravel‐Bed Rivers

Publication: Journal of Hydraulic Engineering
Volume 120, Issue 1

Abstract

Velocity measurements carried out in a rectangular laboratory flume having a gravel bed are presented. The measurements are carried out for four different bed shapes, characterized from different concentrations of coarser elements, and for the two conditions of small‐ and large‐scale roughness. The analysis showed that the Dean profile is usable to establish the velocity profile for both hydraulic conditions. For small‐scale hydraulic condition an indirect estimate procedure of the coefficients of Dean profile is proposed.
