Flow Resistance of River Ice Cover

Abstract
An empirical model is developed for describing the time‐dependent variation of the hydraulic resistance coefficient of a river's ice cover as a function of weather and flow conditions. The physical implications of the model formulation are discussed along with its development. Sensitivity analysis is performed to examine the effect of error in the input variables on the flow resistance and the relative importance of model variables. The model is applicable to river reaches with or without an open water area, and is useful in the simulation of winter flow conditions of large rivers.
