Correlation between G0 and τmax for Kaolinite Clay

Publication: Journal of Geotechnical Engineering
Volume 109, Issue 5

Abstract

The low-amplitude shear modulus, Go, of cohesive soils is needed for evaluation of dynamic response of soil masses or foundation systems. Previous studies have shown that there may be a correlation between Go and the static shearing strength, τmax, but the importance of the variables involved is not clear. An experimental program to evaluate the influence of average confining pressure, σ¯o, and overconsolidation ratio, OCR, on a kaolinite clay is described. Vac-Aire extruded samples of this clay were subjected to resonant column tests to determine Goand consolidated-undrained triaxial tests determined τmax, under similar confining conditions and strain rates. Results of this investigation showed that ratio Gmax is not a constant value even for a single clay soil. A significant effect is produced by variations in σ¯o and OCR which can produce errors of ± 50%. Therefore, use of τmax to estimate Go is a crude procedure at best.
