Transfer Functions to Remove the Effect of Corners on Rayleigh Waves

Publication: Journal of Engineering Mechanics
Volume 125, Issue 1

Abstract

This research uses laser ultrasonic techniques to develop transfer functions that remove the effect of geometric features on experimentally measured Rayleigh waves. These transfer functions are developed using a repeatable, broadband optical source and a high-fidelity sensor, a dual probe, laser interferometer. The transfer functions are developed by comparing the frequency changes between incident and transmitted Rayleigh waves that interact with a prescribed corner. These transfer functions are used to operate on different signals (waves) that contain the effect of both the corner and a defect, to remove the effect of the corner and isolate the contribution of the defect. The accuracy of these transfer functions is demonstrated and the robustness of the proposed technique is established.
