Continuous and Discontinuous Failure Modes
Publication: Journal of Engineering Mechanics
Volume 122, Issue 1
Abstract
A complete failure process involves continuous and discontinuous modes that are often modeled separately via smeared and discrete approaches. This paper investigates the transition between continuous and discontinuous modes by using the concept of a moving material boundary due to the jumps in conservation laws. Based on the jump conditions, the relation between smeared and discrete models is discussed.
