Time‐Domain Analyses of Dam‐Reservoir System. I: Exact Solution

Publication: Journal of Engineering Mechanics
Volume 117, Issue 9

Abstract

An exact solution for the transient responses of (flexible) structure‐(infinite) reservoir systems is presented. Exact consideration of the radiation condition of the infinite reservoir and the deformation of the structure are included in the formulation, which explicitly expresses the physical phenomena of the fluid‐structure system. Interactive behaviors of the fluid‐structure system with different material properties are demonstrated by numerical examples when the system is subjected to ramp accelerations and earthquake ground motions. The comparisons of transient responses of the system of empty and full reservoirs are also presented. Numerical results show that the fluid effect and the deformation of the structure can greatly affect the interactive behaviors of the fluid‐structure system.
